Orbits Newsletter – December 2014
At the AANSW meeting on 8th November, our speaker was experienced Victorian astrologer, teacher and author, Lyndall McQuinn who presented an “Introduction to Shamanic Astrology”. Lyndall began by explaining she’d always focused on the centre of the chart, so the concept of Shamanic Astrology had been with her from the beginning. The Magicians Seat lies at the centre of the astrological wheel and Shamanic Astrology, which Lyndall described as a form of Astrodrama, beckons us to step inside the chart and experience how planetary patterns actually work. Using astrology in a traditional way, Lyndall had always felt she was outside the chart, when she much preferred to be on the inside!
Lyndall explained that the angles of the chart lock us into the chart wheel, and IC and Descendant are just as important as MC and Ascendant. Entering the chart from the IC, which represents the roots on which we stand, we walk towards the MC, then move to the Ascendant and finally the Descendant. With clients, Lyndall observes how they move from IC to MC, for example, do they turn and look back into the wheel, or do they look outwards from the MC? And with the Ascendant, do they walk easily to the Ascendant and like being there, or do they turn back inside the wheel? All these indications, Lyndall said, give insight into how the energies of a chart are being handled. Personally, I found it fascinating to hear Lyndall describe these processes, how she sensed and observed the energerics of a client’s response to their birth chart from the inside. It seemed akin to a form of “astrological kinesiology”.
Lyndall then discussed the interaction of the Elements (Earth, Air, Fire and Water) and Modes (Cardinal, Fixed and Mutable) in a straightforward way, which I found most appealing. Using a simplified 4 by 3 synthesis for each astrological sign; mutable earth became “changing form”, and mutable air became “changing thought”, and so on. Lyndall also described the Personal Planets as creating the “marionette” of our instinctual natures, while Outer Planets add extra dimension and colour to the pattern of the Personal Planets. Simply stated, Jupiter expands, Saturn restricts, Uranus destabilises, Neptune confuses, Pluto transforms, and Chiron exposes vulnerabilities. Lyndall asks clients to step into their planets in the chart wheel, to get their direct energetic response, for example, to “standing in their Sun Sign”. She noted that the order in which people access the energies of their chart is important in how the chart functions. Compatibilities and incompatibilities of chart aspects were also considered by Element, Mode and Gender, and Lyndall noted that squares are not always problematic. Lyndall’s work is experiential and as clients move around inside their wheel, they create the language of their own birth charts.
Lyndall’s presentation was absorbing. She demonstrated that Shamanic Astrology takes us on a journey from outside the chart, where we may simply be verbalising concepts we have learned, leading us inside the chart to experience where strengths lie and blockages exist. Lyndall’s parting thought was “don’t let anyone else stand in places in your chart which may disempower you”! Thank you, Lyndall for a fascinating presentation, for your many insights into Shamanic Astrology, and for making the long trip up from Melbourne to visit AANSW. I would not be surprised if you have a few visitors down south, such was the level of interest in your presentation.
