When I first saw an astrology chart my hand automatically hovered over the centre of the wheel. I could feel the energetic vibration of the pattern reflected in the chart. This centre of the wheel has become the point I call the Magicians Seat.
Astrology is geocentric. From our birth charts we look out into the heavens and see the planets revolve around the Earth. If we locate the Earth in the centre of the chart, as opposed to opposite the Sun, we too view the planetary pattern as it revolves around us. The centre of the chart gives us a 360° perspective from Earth, certainly a vantage point for a shaman/magician.
Shamanism, cut short, is really about perspectives. It does not matter whether perspectives are drug enhanced or not the key to creating resolutions is in how we perceive the situation. We do not need to take drugs to be shamans; we need to be able to view realities from many veils.
To approach Shamanic Astrology we need to be able to shift our perspective to the centre of the astrological wheel. This position I call the Magician’s Seat. From this seat we become immersed in the pattern of the planets as opposed to being located on the outside of the wheel distanced from the pattern. In this centre we see our own planetary pattern formed around us. We also see the directions of the current energy sources flowing into our grid, known as the transitory energies.
My early perception of astrology looked like this, the energy moving in and through the centre of the wheel. Each planetary influence reflected like a coloured ray throughout the wheel.
Your energy blueprint is an energetic wheel with you sitting in the middle holding onto a string of energetic sockets. These sockets could all be represented in different colours. This is the pattern of the personal person.
Viewing the chart from this perspective means we can take hold of each of these coloured rays and direct the energy to wherever it flows according to the aspect grid, often drawn in the centre of the chart. We can also see whatever veil the transiting and progressing planets are entering our pattern through and follow their path along the aspect grid.
To begin working with Shamanic Astrology we need to practice sitting in the Magicians Seat and then journey out to each of our planetary placements. This gives an experiential interpretation to the planets, as opposed to a text book interpretation. We begin to experience our personal patterning via our senses. We think it; we feel it and we are touched by what it brings up for us.
The most important planets in this work are the personal planets. These planets create the personality. We need to understand clearly how these aspects of our psyche operate. If we move into each part and differentiate it from all other factors, we can learn and understand how it is functioning. This can be quite different to how it is supposed to be performing by astrological theory.
For example I often find when people are moving along the energy lines in their charts, squares are not necessarily difficult but very familiar and trines can be very tricky. If two planets are in the same sign and a degree apart, they are two separate aspects of psyche. We need to know and cherish every facet of our patterning. If the Sun and Mercury are conjunct they are not the same placement. So often they get lumped together yet experientially they are worlds apart.
The personal planets hold so much of the characters that we are.
Sun – heart and soul of who we are
Moon- the emotional being
Mercury- our mind, thinking processes and communication
Venus- the desire nature
Mars-how we achieve our desires, putting our actions into play
Asc- who we show others
The interaction of these planetary placements is what I call the puppet. If we study these placements we can move freely within our wheel from one placement to the next. We learn to balance our emotions by not dwelling there to the point of despair. We can choose to shift ourselves to another facet of the wheel, Mercury maybe to get some logistics into the situation.
In making decisions it is wise to spend time contemplating Venus and how she operates with regards our desires. Are we working with the desire nature or against? This knowledge becomes life changing; it allows us the understanding of how our inner personality operates and gives us choice to move on from being stuck in the same patterns and an option to move to another part of us.
The role of the outer planets becomes one of decoration. This is quite contradictory to modern astrological thinking. The outer planets are not personal; they are bridging energies, often defining generational patterning. They could be summarised
Uranus-destabilises and liberates-
Neptune- confuses and distorts
Chiron- signifies wounds and heals.
If Pluto contacts the Moon it intensifies the emotion within the chart. The focus is the expression of the Moon not the Pluto. This thinking does not negate the outer planets; it views then as influences on the character.
Shamanic Astrology allows us to pick up all the threads of our energy pattern and weave how we want them to function. The first step is to enter the pattern for ourselves and learn who we are energetically. We need to understand the basic nature of our personal pattern, elementally and by mode and gender.
The second step is to view the influences on the basic pattern by the outer planets. We can then evaluate what is functioning well or what is dysfunctional. We identify how each circuit is operating by its aspect pattern.
The final step is to take charge. If aspects of our pattern are dysfunctional then where does the pattern flow? We can follow the flow by the connection of the planets to each other. We can then change the circuit to flow in a different pattern.
This is powerful shamanic work. Shamanism requires us to stop and observe situations until we find the energetic flow. The Astrology Chart is a representation of energetic flow. If we can perceive where the energy diffuses (Neptune) and blocks, (Saturn) or overwhelms us, (Jupiter) we can create a new pathway. The viewing platform is the centre of the wheel, the Magician’s Seat.
Sitting in the Magician’s Seat alters our perspective of our astrology chart. It allows us to become interactive with the pattern we have chosen to come in with. This is the basic pattern which does not alter but we can move around within it from more than one position. Our conditioning and influences create the automatic way our energy flows but our awareness of this fact gives us the freedom to change this flow.
Shamanic Astrology asks us to perceive our pattern and experience it. Then look to see how our planets interact with each other and observe how the energy moves, from one place to another. Then we can create change with awareness of what directions we are trying to achieve.
