Meditation

The value of meditation is not in which technique suits you but in the doing of it regularly. Finding the gift of meditation was a turning point in my life.

It was an unexpected gift, which I encountered in Nepal at various Buddhist centres. I remember my struggle to be still in a monastery for three weeks learning meditation techniques.

I remember arriving in a chamber at A Buddhist Temple where the monks were chanting deeply, playing strange instruments resonating music that was designed to feel.

I also remember hating getting up early every morning to meditate. I decided I would discipline myself for a year because I could see the effect it had on mellowing my reckless mind.

Then one weekend I bounced into my car eager to drive to a retreat I was attending and marveling at how I’d changed without even realising it. I couldn’t wait to hit my cushion and gone was my fixation on alcohol and drugs.

People tell me they can not meditate because their mind is never still. Whose rules say your mind needs to be still? The value of meditating lies is giving you the time of day to hear what the mind is trying to say.

Some days it is screaming and others it is quiet. So be it.

I began my practice of meditation following very strict disciplines until I knew meditation would never leave my life. It is like taking a shower.

Then there came a turning point where I gave myself the freedom to explore many ways of experiencing the inner mind. I have found techniques fit into four modes of practice

  • Breath
  • Sound
  • Visual
  • Movement.

It is likely that certain techniques suit certain people. Personally I love them all. It is the communion with my inner world that keeps a balance. Consequently I have written many visual meditations. Try a couple.

Feminine from the base :

  • Opening the base chakra, hook down into the Earth’s Centre.
  • Be alive in the sexuality of the feminine.
  • Slowly deepen by sliding down the Earth cord to the molten core.
  • The feminine realms connect deeply to the Earth core.
  • The caves of descent awaken the feminine.
  • Deeper past the story of Hades and Persephone
  • Far deeper than eating pomegranates.
  • What did Persephone do in six months of descent?
  • Bring the fire from the core to the vulva
  • Create the opening for the seed to culminate in fertilisation.
  • Draw the fire to the seat of sexuality.

Gateway of Libra - Gate of Attraction

A wary discomfit pricks you deeply inside. You know the person who has just entered your space has you feeling vulnerable. You want to hide the feelings that are coming into motion in your heart. Consciously you speak each word, as if for some reason it is important you are understood and approved of.

As you interact you feel the tension between you increasing. A mix of nervousness and excitement. You take a moment to search the eyes of the others’ face. In that glance you feel uncovered.

Surprise and uncertainty now accompany you. In some moments you enjoy the thrill and ease of excited energy that pulses between you. This alternates into doubts, inhibitions and the fear of unveiling your imperfections takes hold. All the walls start threshing around inside of you, trying to turn you away from feeling the vulnerability and tenderness.

The moments pass. You part company. What is left are the images of perfection that you believe will complete your urge for loving. The hope of ever-lasting union with an ideal partner. Once alone, these images are easier to explore. The other becomes wholly your projection. The hidden darkness which contains your fear, masks and lover’s costumes lies dormant. Waiting. Anticipating what the next unfolding of this energetic dance shall be.
